DISPLAY LIVE IMAGES WITH GRAPHIC OVERLAYS FROM MONOCHROME OR COLOR CAMERAS

Buffalo Grove, Illinois -- EPIX, Inc, manufacturer of imaging boards and software for the PC computer, announces new display modes for its PIXCI® (PCI) image capture board. Real time full resolution video rate images can be displayed on the computer monitor -- NOT a small display tucked into the corner of the screen, but a large high resolution image exploiting the maximum capabilities of the S/VGA display system! A second capability, display of non-destructive graphic overlays, allows reference lines, arrows, graphic symbols, and text to appear on the live displayed images. These new display modes have been added through enhanced software support and are implemented in conjunction with 'selected S/VGA display cards supporting Microsoft DirectX. No hardware changes to the PIXCI® board were required. As a result, all PIXCI® boards, including all boards already in the field, can take advantage of these capabilities.

The PIXCI® PCI board has always had the ability to capture full resolution images at video rates. The PIXCI® board uses PCI bus master technology to initiate data transfers without intervention by the CPU. Most PCI computers exceed the bandwidth requirements for moving the image data to computer memory. The PIXCI® board has always been able to capture video rate image sequences constrained only by the amount of available computer memory.

In contrast, video rate display was more elusive. Color conversion, by the Pentium CPU, was required before the images could be displayed, and the conversion process reduced display rates. The new modes pipeline the video stream from the PIXCI® board through the PCI bus, directly to the S/VGA's memory without a processing step at the Pentium. Use of XCIP interactive software or XCOBJIPL DLLs, both for Windows 95, is required.
